Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids. In humans, vitamin D is unique both because it functions as a prohormone and because the body can synthesize it (as vitamin D3) when sun exposure is adequate (hence its nickname, the "sunshine vitamin"). It is classified as a vitamin because it is not manufactured by the body and must be obtained from external sources, such as sun exposure or by eating foods of animal origin. The body converts it into calcidiol and then calcitriol, a secosteroid hormone with a multitude of biological functions vital to one’s health far beyond its known role of bone building. Calcitriol is believed to target over 2,000 genes or 10 percent of the human genome.
