Black Cohosh, Agnus Castus, Soya (isoflavones)
Agnus Castus has been used since ancient times as a female remedy, supporting the functioning of the female reproductive system. It was used to regularise monthly hormonal cycles and help support the transition into menopause.
Black cohosh is again being heralded as an herbal antidote for such menopausal symptoms as hot flushes. It has even been recommended as an alternative to standard Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can produce unwanted side effects in many women.
Soya contains isoflavones that are a class of phytochemicals (plant chemicals). They are also a type of phytoestrogen or plant hormone that resembles human estrogen in chemical structure but is much weaker. Because of this mimicking action phytoestrogens can dock at estrogen receptor sites blocking the full effect of the stronger version produced by the body. There are many isoflavones but two of the most important are genistein and diadzein. These isoflavones may help relieve mild menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes. In South-East Asia where Soya is a mainstay of the average diet there appear to be fewer reported symptoms associated with the menopause than women in the West typically experience. Another benefit of isoflavones is that they may help prevent osteoporosis.
