GINKGO BILOBA
An ancient remedy.
The use of Ginkgo biloba has its roots in traditional
Chinese health care stretching back through the centuries.
Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) is obtained from the leaves
of the ginkgo biloba tree. The active constituents of
GBE are believed to be the bioflavonoids and terpenes.
Bioflavonoids may help to protect and strengthen the blood
vessels, especially the tiny capillaries which carry vital
food and oxygen to the body's tissues and brain. May also
exert a protective effect on nerve cells. It is this increased
circulation and oxygen supply to the brain and neural
tissues which appear to be responsible for the greater
mental clarity and concentration, especially as we age.
Boosting the circulatory system.
The terpenes in Ginkgo biloba help to support healthy
circulation by inhibiting the action of a blood clotting
substance called platelet activating factor (PAF). Ginkgo
biloba therefore helps blood flow. The extract may improve
circulation to all areas of the body, including the extremities,
helping to relieve coldness, increase mobility and give
a healthy glow to the skin.
A powerful antioxidant
Part of the benefit of Ginkgo is thought to be due to
its effects as an antioxidant, or free radical scavenger.
The central nervous system and brain are especially susceptible
to free radical damage, and it is believed that gingko's
antioxidant action is a major contributor to its "anti-ageing"
benefits.
It is the actives in GBE that have antioxidant activity
and help capture free radicals at the retinal and cerebral
level. By preventing free radical production, ginkgo appears
to stabilize cell membranes and increase the flexibility
of blood vessel walls and red blood cells.
The "memory tree"
An efficient blood flow to the brain is vital. Ginkgo
helps to promote circulation to the brain and many people
have found that this extract improves their focus and
concentration.
